To uniquely celebrate its 40th anniversary from a technology perspective, last week the Technology department of Exact organised the Exact Hackatalks. This dedicated tech event combines about 15 tech talks and a hackathon, that ran for 40 hours, aligning perfectly with the company’s 40-year milestone and 40 years of continuous innovation.

About 700 developers work on a daily basis on innovating and optimising software of Exact to best serve small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) and their accountants. Chief Technology Officer Jeroen van der Heijden opened the Hackatalks with a plenary session explaining how the technology strategy continues to be the backbone of innovation at Exact. Using the right technology for the right solution
In the four decades of existence of Exact, multiple shifts in technology took place, from MS-DOS, to Windows and from the Cloud to AI. Jeroen continues: “Through the years, we kept investing in our products and in our customers. We have applied new technologies, launched software solutions, built platforms and created links. The value of using the right technology in our software is part of what the software brings to our customers. Our customers don't care about the technology we use. They want to have the best software solution and we need to make sure that whatever we can take from technology, it's of value for them. That’s why we continue to follow technology shifts to ensure long term value to our customers.”
Hacking for tech automation
About 165 colleagues divided in 22 teams based in the Netherlands and Kuala Lumpur were hacking for 40 hours, which symbolises the 40th anniversary of Exact. The mission for them was to hack for tech automation, which refers to the use of technology to perform tasks or processes with minimal human intervention. Automation can streamline workflows, improve accuracy and free up human resources to focus on more strategic or creative endeavors. At the end of the Hackatalks week, the teams presented their inspiring and innovative ideas in a competitive pitch battle. The proposed innovations will be reviewed by their management for next steps.
