Storage locations in Exact for Wholesale Distribution and Manufacturing
A warehouse in Exact Online can be subdivided into storage locations. With storage locations we can easier find back our inventory. How we use storage locations depends on the size of our warehouse, but also on our requirements for inventory accuracy. Three possibilities are to our avail in Exact Online for Wholesale Distribution and Manufacturing: No storage locations, fixed storage locations and multiple storage locations.
Using no storage locations If we have a small warehouse, or if we also know by head where everything is, then we probably do not need storage locations. In Exact for Wholesale Distribution and Exact for Manufacturing Standard we have no choice: These editions do not cater for storage locations at all. In Wholesale Distribution or Manufacturing Advanced and Premium we have the choice per warehouse whether we would like to use storage locations. (Click to enlarge) The advantage of not using storage locations is the simplicity: we do not make errors with locations. The disadvantage of not using storage locations is that all information resides in the head of the warehouse manager. That could be an issue if someone else wants to find an item, or wants to put away an item. Using fixed storage locations If we need the same item regularly, then it may be possible to assign it a fixed storage location. Then, the screws are always on A and the bolts always on B. In Exact for Wholesale Distribution Standard and Exact for Manufacturing Standard we cannot use fixed storage locations: this feature is not available. In Wholesale Distribution or Manufacturing Advanced we can choose per warehouse whether we will use storage locations. (Click to enlarge) The advantage of fixed storage locations is the tidiness: we can find or put away an item with ease. The disadvantage of fixed storage locations is that we are not flexible with our shelf space: Once we need extra space for an item we cannot put it away at a different or a second location. Using multiple storage locations When it does matter where a particular item is stored, for example because we also use serial- or batch numbers, or because we want to make efficient use of limited shelf space, then it may be required that we use multiple storage locations. This way we can identify where the batches are with the nearest expiry date, or differentiate between items under inspection, in a bulk location or in a floor stock location. Only in Wholesale Distribution or Manufacturing Premium we can use multiple storage locations (per item). (Click to enlarge) The advantage of multiple storage locations is the professional organization: we are well prepared to use a Warehouse Management System (WMS) or scanning solution. The disadvantage of multiple storage locations is that we need a good discipline: Are we emptying locations with little stock first? Are we first using floor stock and then only bulk stock? Are we used to stock under inspection not being available for use? See also Support for warehouse location management in manufacturing.
